Chiropractic and Weight Loss Chiropractors can offer a variety of weight loss strategies including spinal manipulation, massage, and nutritional advice. Believe it or not, spinal manipulation has been shown effective in weight loss management. Spinal manipulation improves flexibility and takes the pressure off the spinal cord. In addition, the simple act of aligning the spine aides in the absorption of essential nutrients.
Isn't it just as effective (if not better) to go on a diet?
 |
No. In 2007, UCLA researchers reported in the April issue of American Psychologist, the journal of the American Psychological Association, that people on diets typically lose 5 to 10 percent of their starting weight in the first six months. However, at least one-third to two-thirds of people on diets regain more weight than they lost within four or five years. So, while you may lose weight on a diet, you will most likely become heavier in the long run. Research also shows that diets make you hungry and create powerful cravings for the very foods you are trying to avoid. Not only that, but new evidence suggests that repeatedly losing and gaining weight is linked to cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes and altered immune function.
How do I start?
Chiropractors are specifically trained in diet and nutritional counseling. Your chiropractor can design a nutritional program just for you, based on your specific needs.
Studies have shown that poor diet and nutritional imbalances contribute to a number of serious illnesses, such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and cancer. With a personal nutrition and exercise plan, as well as offering support and encouragement during the weight-loss process, your chiropractor will help you maintain good health and minimize the risk of developing these serious health conditions.
